This method involves either a natural cycle or one with minimal ovarian stimulation to facilitate the growth of a follicle. Throughout this process, the follicle’s development is closely monitored using ultrasound and hormone level checks. When the leading follicle reaches approximately 18mm in diameter, a precise injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or another triggering medication is administered. This injection serves multiple purposes: it completes the maturation of the egg, prepares the uterine lining for implantation, and times the ovulation precisely.
Approximately 36 hours after the injection, intrauterine insemination (IUI) is performed at Genesis Reproductive Centre. Unlike some fertility treatments, IUI does not require sedation, making it a less invasive option. The sperm sample, which can be provided by a partner or a donor, is carefully prepared in the laboratory. The lab processes the sample through a washing procedure to remove impurities and concentrate the healthiest, most motile sperm.
The processed sperm, now in its optimal state, is then inserted directly into the uterus using a small, flexible plastic catheter with a diameter of about 1mm. This direct placement increases the chances of sperm reaching the egg in the fallopian tubes, thus enhancing the likelihood of fertilisation and pregnancy. This procedure is typically quick and relatively painless, allowing patients to resume normal activities shortly afterward.
